If you come across a post suggesting that a friend may be struggling with an eating disorder, please report it to us. We will reach out to offer support and ensure that harmful content promoting or encouraging eating disorders is removed. For more details, you can refer to our Community Standards.

Offering Support to a Friend: If you’re concerned about a friend and believe they might be dealing with an eating disorder, here’s how you can offer support:

Do:

  • Check in with your friend in a gentle, supportive way. For example, you might say, “How have you been feeling lately? I’m here if you want to talk about anything.”

  • Use “I” statements to express your concern. For instance, “I’ve noticed you didn’t have breakfast today, and I’m worried about you.”

  • Respect their space if they’re not ready to talk. Let them know you care and are available whenever they’re ready to open up.

  • Suggest they consider speaking with a healthcare professional, like a counselor or doctor. You could say, “I’m not sure if it would help, but have you thought about talking to a professional about what you’re going through?”

  • Spend quality time with them to show your support. Engage in activities you both enjoy, such as chatting or watching a movie.

  • Be a positive role model by focusing on your own health and avoiding negative comments about body image or appearances.

Don’t:

  • Use accusatory language like, “You’re not taking care of yourself.”

  • Make your friend feel ashamed or guilty about their appearance or habits.

  • Offer simple fixes like, “Just stop dieting and everything will be fine!”

  • Expect to resolve their issues on your own. Professional help is essential for effective support.
